WiIlmott Dixon have won the main contract for the new £30m health centre on the site of the Janet Adegoke Leisure Centre on Bloemfontein Road.
The Rogers Stirk Harbour designed project for Building Better Health involves redevelopment of the site with the construction of a seven storey building to provide a health centre, retail and IT cafe on the ground floors; replacement social services facility and health care centre on the first floors; and 175 flats above.
The scheme has planning approval from LB Hammersmith & Fulham, as well as approval from the Mayor of London. It survived the interest of the Secretary of State, who was unhappy that only 40% of the housing was affordable. However, the provision of better health services – the building will house GPs, dentists, a pharmacy and a range of other services such as podiatry, day surgery, district nurses and health visitors – to one of the unhealthiest wards in the Borough on the argument.
