West London shines in Green Flags

The Green Flag Awards scheme has unveiled this year’s winners, with Ealing bagging the most new awards in the country, and West London as a whole collecting more than either Scotland or Wales.

The awards are the mark of quality green space in the UK. In total, 1,448 parks, cemeteries, universities, shopping centres and community gardens have met the high standards demanded.

In the London Borough of Ealing, seven new sites will be flying a Green Flag Award for the first time – the most new sites for any borough in the UK. West London has a total of 64 awards – more than Scotland or Wales – with Hillingdon the most successful local authority area in the country with 25 awards on its own.

Cllr Ray Puddifoot, Leader of the Council says: “For Hillingdon to receive the highest number of Green Flags in the country is a fantastic achievement.

“Our record of success is testament to the commitment of Hillingdon’s Friends’ Groups and communities – as well as the dedication of council staff.”

The Green Flag Awards are run by Keep Britain Tidy, under licence from the Department for Communities and Local Government, in partnership with Keep Scotland Beautiful, Keep Wales Tidy and Tidy Northern Ireland, the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens and the National Housing Federation.
