West London greener than Scotland

cranford countryside parkHillingdon is the greenest Borough as West London collects Green Flag Awards.

LB Hillingdon has picked up 13 Green Flags – the national award for green spaces – making it the Borough with the highest number of green spaces meeting the Flag standard in West London. Indeed it nearly won the most in London – only Westminster has more Green Flags than Hillingdon, with 15.

West London collected 28 Flags in all – more than twice as many as the whole of Scotland, and only two short of Wales. Greater London pulled in 191.

bedfont lakesParks and open spaces are an important part of urban life – ‘green infrastructure’ has been shown to be important to health and well-being, to be able to play a part in community cohesion, and to make for happier and more productive workers. Places like Cranford Countryside Park (top), Bedfont Lakes Country Park (left) and the innovative Northala Fields (below –¬†created from spoil from construction work) help people ‘recreate’, and regain their zest for life, reducing sick days and upping productivity.

The Green Flags are the national standard for parks and green spaces. The award scheme began in 1996 as a means of recognising and rewarding the best green spaces in the country.  It was also seen as a way of encouraging others to achieve the same high environmental standards, creating a benchmark of excellence in recreational green areas.

Awards are given on an annual basis and winners must apply each year to renew their Green Flag status.
