DCLG has announced the pilot schemes for community budgets – with West London and White City featuring on the list.
The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) said the “community budgets” pilots will give communities control over service delivery. They also hope it will allow significant savings in public spending. The pilots pool public spending in a location into a single budget which is controlled locally.
There are four “showcase areas” for the community budget next year, of which one is “West London”, comprising LB Hammersmith & Fulham, RB Kensington & Chelsea and LB Westminster. This will focus particularly on skills and training for over 16s, speeding up family courts, and curbing youth violence and anti-social behaviour
In addition to the showcase areas, ten “neighbourhood level” areas have been selected to develop smaller scale community budgets. This list includes White City, which will aim to integrate neighbourhood service budgets including welfare, crime, and social care.
Cllr Steven Greenhalgh stood down as leader of LB Hammersmith & Fulham in order to concentrate on the community budget planned for White City.
