Homebuilding in Wandsworth surged in 2011, according to figures released this week.
The borough recorded a significant increase in planning consents, construction starts and new home completions compared to the previous calendar year.
A total of 865 new homes were completed across the borough in 2011 – a 58 per cent year on year rise, although this is still significantly down on the 2009 figure of over 1,800. Still, this is a much better picture than exists outside London.
The number of construction starts increased by 74 per cent to reach 2,433 – suggesting the increase in completions will be sustained at least over the short term. Planning permission was granted for a total of 5,729 new dwellings in 2011. This is more than double the 2010 figure of 2,372.
Leader of Wandsworth Council Ravi Govindia said: “This is the second successive year we’ve recorded an increase in building activity here in Wandsworth.”
“The upturn has been led by our Nine Elms and Wandsworth Town regeneration areas where we’ve had a great deal of success in attracting new investment.”
