T2 on 2Degrees list

Heathrow’s submission to the 2Degrees Sustainability Awards in the “building or property” category for Terminal 2 has been shortlisted.

The entry submission notes that T2 has been delivered on schedule and below budget, and also that the Energy Centre will save 13,000 tonnes of CO2/year compared to the use of gas and grid electricity, improving Heathrow’s energy efficiency by 40% more than required through building regulations.

Heathrow also sourced 75% of the 25,000 tonnes of woodchip required each year within a 50 mile radius, reducing haulage costs and associated CO2 emissions, whilst supporting local jobs and businesses.

The employment story figured large too, with the construction academy having provided pre-employment training to 369 people and placed 214 people from the local community into sustainable construction jobs.

Award winners are voted by peers in the sustainability arena. Voting is live online.
