Saracens’ plans to redevelop Barnet Copthall stadium have been recommended for approval by Barnet planning officers.
The plans involve rebuilding the stadium to produce a 10,000 seater stadium on the site of the athletics track. It would be home to the rugby club presently based in Watford, but still host the local athletics clubs, and be available for community use.
THere have been concerns over the plans, notably from the GLA, as the land sits in the Green Belt. There has also been significant local objection, but this is reported to be outweighed by public support.
Nigel Wray, chairman of Saracens, told the Barnet Times: “The recommendation is the result of a thorough analysis of all aspects of the plans and a lot of hard work to develop the best possible scheme.
“Issues have been raised throughout the process, such as Green Belt policy and transportation. We have responded positively by amending our plans, providing further information and introducing robust safeguards.”
