Rolls-Royce “outstanding”

segro rolls royceAPP have been awarded a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating for the Rolls-Royce Heathrow Service Centre.

The SEGRO and Aviva Investors joint venture won the rating for the 8,900 sq m Rolls-Royce Heathrow Service Centre which was constructed during 2012.  This is the first construction project in the UK to achieve a Post Completion Review certificate of ‘Outstanding’ under the BRE’s 2011 benchmark standards.

The building was constructed to BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standards and following a further review by the Building Research Establishment (BRE), this rating has now been upgraded.

Construction of the Rolls-Royce Heathrow Service Centre started in March last year and practical completion was achieved in December 2012.  Rolls-Royce uses this new facility to provide specialist maintenance and support services for commercial aero engines.

In undertaking their assessment of the environmental performance of the building, the BRE was particularly impressed with the processes that APP and its main contractor on the project, Winvic, followed to ensure the building was constructed to the highest standards of energy efficiency and sustainability.  These included ensuring the building has the highest levels of airtightness and thermal insulation, whilst still maintaining a comfortable working environment for its occupiers.  Construction materials were only selected which would have the most impact on reducing operational emissions.  In addition, the lighting throughout the building is based on movement and daylight controls, and energy and water consumption is controlled by an automatic monitoring and targeting building management system.  Other features of the building include the use of photovoltaic panels, an air source heat pump, rainwater harvesting and during construction 96% of waste was diverted from landfill.
