Reports suggest the MoD is considering the sale of RAF Northolt for redevelopment to help deal with cuts in funding.
Reports in the Guardian suggests that the Ministry of Defence is considering selling off the base, which is also used by the Queen and US President, in an effort to balance the books after significant budget cuts.
Plans might include selling all or part of the site for redevelopment, and it is possible that the base could be included in the planned consultation about the future of UK air travel, which is due in March this year. The report suggests the existing runway could provide additional civilian air capacity as an alternative to the Estuary Airport or further expansion at Heathrow.
The RAF has already sold off a clutch of bases in and around London through ProjectMoDEL. This saw bases at Bentley Priory, Uxbridge, and elsewhere sold for redvelopment. Five of the six bases sold this way, to a Joint Venture between Vinci and St Modwen, now have planning permission.
