SKNT has given the job of turning its old portakabin home into a community centre to Practice Architects.
The Portakabin on Caterbury Road on the South Kilburn Estate was home to South Kilburn Neighbourhood Trust and the South Kilburn Partnership until late last year. Now the plan is to transform the site into the “South Kilburn Studios”, which will include artists’ studios and a shared workshop. It is scheduled to open in Spring 2011.
The competition to decide on the architects for the site was run by the Architecture Foundation, whose Director, Sarah Ichioka, told the Architects’ Journal: “We were very impressed by Practice Architecture’s elegant and convincing approach to our outline brief, and in particular with their commitment to establish a clear structure to deliver training opportunities for South Kilburn residents.”
Andy Donald, Brent Council’s director of regeneration and major projects, added: ‘The South Kilburn Studios project is a tremendous opportunity to harness the latent creativity in South Kilburn as part of the wider regeneration process. It will connect local young people with creative professionals who will provide mentoring, creative apprenticeships and advice. It will help embed creativity into the transformation of South Kilburn for years to come.”
Practice Architecture also designed Frank’s Café – a temporary rooftop restaurant and bar on a car park rooftop in Peckham.
