Phillips on Heathrow

Mike Phillips, editor of Property Week, has said that expanding Heathrow seems the most pragmatic solution to the UK’s aviation capacity crisis.

Phillips was speaking at the West London Business Property Lunch on July 19. He said that while Boris Johnson’s plan for redeveloping Heathrow as housing had some merits for providing homes for London’s expanding population, and while the idea of an estuary airport could help create a ‘property superhub’ there, the UK already has such a superhub – at Heathrow – and that the risks around west London jobs and asset values were ‘not worth it’.

He said – without expressing a personal preference – that expanding Heathrow seemed the most pragmatic option available, and that in such situations, the most pragmatic option is the most often chosen.
