New Transport Secretary commits to Crossrail

New Transport Secretary Philip Hammond has confirmed Crossrail will go ahead under the new Government.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, he said: “I think the funding for Crossrail is already established. We are making sure that in delivering the project we absolutely optimise value for money.”

He indicated that they would look for savings, saying: “I want to make sure in discussions with the Mayor that right the way through the project … opportunities for value engineering have been fully explored”, and omitted to commit to completing the new line to the present schedule, which has a target for opening in 2017.
