The Mayor of London is reported to be preparing to object to the widening of permitted development rights to allow the conversion of industrial units in to homes.
Planning reports Boris Johnson is set to object to the plans, which are being consulted on. The changes would allow light industrial buildings and warehouses to change use to homes without planning permission, through a prior approval notice.
Boris feels this would endanger London’s supply of industrial floor space.
Observers have suggested that most vacant industrial units are unsuitable for conversion as they would not provide homes suitable for profitable market sale without alterations to the buildings so significant that they would require planning permission – such as changes to facades.
