M4 to go smart

A 32-mile stretch of the M4 from Hayes to Theale, in West Berkshire, is to become “smart motorway”, allowing vehicles to use the hard shoulder.

The hard shoulder of the M4 will become a fourth lane, easing congestion and reducing travel times. Variable speed limits will also be introduced, following approval of the plan by Transport secretary Chris Grayling.

Work will begin in March 2017 and complete in 2022.
