Imperial College London has moved three places up in the global rankings, from fifth to second, now level with Cambridge University.
The QS rankings put Imperial second equal with Cambridge, and behind only the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Oxford University is fifth, and overall the UK has eight of the global top 30, the strongest UK results recorded in the ten year history of the rankings.
London is the only city in the World with five universities ranked in the top 100.
The QS rankings are based on reputational surveys, the number of citations of research papers, and numbers of international academics and students.
