Imperial looks at M&S shed

Imperial College is reported to be in talks to buy Marks & Spencer’s store format testing facility in White City.

Property Week says the University is discussing acquiring the site for £80m. The site, between the planned Westfield northern extension and Helical Bar & Avivia’s Bricklands site presently hosts 1.5m sq ft of retail format testing space.

In the White City Opportunity Area Planning Framework, it is largely designated as parkland and open space. The acquisition would add significantly to Imperial’s holdings in the area – they are presently developing out the former BBC Woodlands campus – and it is likely that as well as providing a chance to link Woodlands to Shepherds Bush more effectively they would look to house more student accomodation or spin-off commercial space on it.
