LB Hillingdon is offering to repair and refurbish empty privately owned homes to make them fit for rental.
They estimate there are up to 1,700 empty privately owned properties in the borough, and have a £65,000 grant from the Homes & Communities Agency to spend on the first renovations.
Councillor Philip Corthorne, cabinet member for social care, health and housing, told the Uxbridge Gazette: “An empty property could provide a much-needed home for a family, and extra income for the owner. In Hillingdon, like many parts of the country, we have a housing waiting list and would like to help (owners) so they can help us reduce this list”.
The council can serve an empty dwelling management order, which allows the council to renovate the property and bring it back in to use with costs met from future rental revenue.
