The new Leader-elect, Cllr Stephen Cowan, has named his team that is set to be agreed at the council Annual General Meeting on 16 June. At the same time, he has announced a shake-up of the scrutiny process, introducing policy and accountability committees to develop policy in public.

Cllr Stephen Cowan said: “Residents have told us that they want us to protect local health services, back truly affordable homes for local residents to buy or rent and lead a more open and democratic council.”

Cllr Mike Cartwright has been named Deputy Leader. Cllr Andrew Jones, takes the Economic Development and Regeneration portfolio. He is a professor at Birkbeck College specialising in the economy, environmental studies and urban regeneration. Cllr Lisa Homan takes responsibility for Housing.

The new administration has already taken decisions, agreeing to review the decision to close Sulivan Primary School, to cease publication of council magazines, and to end the practice of hanging council promotional messages from lamp posts across the borough.
