Hounslow Council has revived plans to build a new leisure centre in Heston.
At a meeting of executive members last week, councillors approved plans to build a new centre in the vicinity of the existing Heston Leisure Centre, resuming plans that have lain dormant since 2006. The existing centre will remain open for the duration of the construction of the new facilities.
Cllr Pritam Grewal, Hounslow’s lead member for leisure and wellbeing said: “I was very keen to revive this project and give Heston the new leisure facilities it deserves. Given its age and condition, the existing Heston Leisure Centre has been providing the best possible service for the local community for many years. However we are delighted to have been able to put forward a proposal that will improve the facilities at a more realistic investment than the original scheme.”
“Current residential values in the area in the will not support a scheme in the region of £20m that was planned before; the new scheme will cost around £6m-£10m, paid for by housing development in the area and will still offer excellent modern leisure facilities.”
“We will now fast track a feasibility study to decipher the best possible options for the site. Options to consider are whether or not the library building, which has already been improved, is included in any new centre, and ascertain the overall value of the site depending on the market value.”
“Once work is completed, we are sure that the residents of Heston are going to be proud of their fantastic new leisure centre.”
