Harrow Council has cancelled its proposed street lighting PFI.
LB Harrow said it was “irresponsible to commit” to the PFI programme, more than three years after winning £32m of government funding. The Council’s previous administration applied for the funding, but the present one has opted to scrap the PFI before choosing a contractor.
Cllr Susan Hall, portfolio holder for the environment and community safety, said it “was irresponsible to commit to £1 million a year over 25 years – a key condition of the PFI contract – given the unprecedented financial pressures on us caused by the credit crunch”.
Harrow is reported by localgov.co.uk to be the only council to pull out of its PFI streetlighting agreement.
