Transport Secretary Philip Hammond has killed Boris Johnson’s Thames Estuary Airport idea.
The idea of building a new airport on a purpose built island in the estuary had received support from Essex, and opposition from Kent. Now the Transport Secretary has written “I can confirm that the Government has no plans to build any new airports in the region” (meaning the South East).
While the estuary idea was not popular with west London based businesses, this refusal to consider new aiports may reignite the debate around expansion of capacity at existing airports, like Heathrow. Business groups, airlines, and BAA have long argued that expansion is necessary to maintain London’s position as a World City.
