The Government has announced a task force to look at airports in the South East.
Transport Secretary Philip Hammond announced the task force, saying it would look at “better not bigger” airports. Capacity seems sure to be an issue though, with some business groups reported to be sceptical of improvement without expansion, although the Government talked more about a “better passenger experience”.
Hammond said the taskforce, chaired by transport minister Theresa Villiers, would be looking at maintaining Heathrow’s “hub” status “within the constraints of existing runways”. This does not specifically rule out increased flights, or terminal space.
London First suggested it would be difficult to achieve this with Heathrow “already so full”.
