A campaign launched to support Gatwick Airports proposal for a “constellation” of two runway airports surrounding London has been given explicit public sector backing by three county councils.
The campaign website says Surrey County Council, West Sussex County Council and Kent County Council all support a second runway at Gatwick. The campaign say the councils “recognise that business growth brings income which pays for the services and facilities that a 21st century community expects and indeed demands”.
The broad local public sector support for Gatwick is in stark contrast to the opposition faced by Heathrow Airport. Hillingdon Council recently said they would regard the closure of Heathrow as an opportunity, and a “benefit” to Hillingdon residents.
