West Thames College's planned Feltham Skills Centre has been granted planning approval.
The £20m project will replace the dilapidated former People’s Centre on the High Street. The new centre is seen as vital for filling a skills gap in an area which has a high rate of unemployment. It is part of a £90m project by West Thames College, which includes a revamp of its Isleworth campus.
The Hounslow Guardian reports the vote was close - seven votes to six – mainly due to the site being in a conservation area. Even given the planning approval, funding problems may hold up the project. Funding is required from the Learning & Skills Council (LSC), who deferred a decision due to be made on March 4 after their well-publicised financial difficulties. A decision is expected in the next few weeks.
College principal Marjorie Semple said: “We are delighted the committee approved the planning application for the Feltham Skills Centre and look forward to working with residents – both young and old – ensuring everyone in the community benefits from the new facilities.”
