Ealing Bid Chair adds to Arcadia debate

arcadiaPeter Smith, the Chair of the Ealing BID tells Ealing Today Arcadia needs to be given the go-ahead.

Smith says that “anyone using the town centre can see that many retailers are struggling under the twin burden of recession and increased competition most notably from Westfield London.”

He says that the business community, particularly those most affected like the retailers within the site itself, are in support of the Glenkerrin proposals, as they see them as reversing a trend of underinvestment in the Town Centre since the development of The Ealing Broadway Centre, and that the improved permeability, and pedestrian navigation from Ealing Broadway station will revitalise the area.

He criticises Save Ealing’s Centre, the combined lobby groups opposed to the developent, have presented an economic model which is “a recipe for irreversible decline”.

Smith continues: “the redevelopment of this key opportunity site adjacent to the station is an essential way of addressing Ealings relative decline in the face of new competing centres in West London.”
