Co-op plans approved

Plans have been approved for the redevelopment of the former Royal Arsenal Co-operative Store in the Upper Tooting Road.

The historic façade of this 1920s town centre building will be retained as part of the new development, which will provide four new shops, an 83 bedroom hotel, plus accommodation for 75 students and space for use by local community groups.

Planning committee chairman Cllr Nick Cuff said: “The redevelopment will retain the attractive and locally important façade of this prominent building, and also breathe new life into this part of Tooting town centre.

“The opening of a new hotel and the new student accommodation will have a positive effect on other businesses in the area and make a good contribution to the ongoing efforts to revitalise and regenerate Tooting town centre.”
