Bridge plans shelved

Plans to improve travel between Ashford and Hounslow with a £1million new foot and cycle path have been shelved after funding has failed to materialise.

Surrey County Council promised £500,000 – half the necessary funds – to expand Clockhouse Lane, which runs over a bridge linking the two towns. Hounslow Council had approached TfL for help with the remaining £500,000 required but was told it had to prioritise the scheme alongside others in the borough, after which it is understood it placed it second after another scheme in Bedfont. A TfL spokesman said it was made clear to the council that there would not be enough funds for all the schemes.

Surrey and Hounslow councils had hoped to construct a new three-metre wide foot and cycle bridge on the eastern side of the existing bridge, incorporating a ramp on each approach. The bridge is understood to remain part of both council’s plans.
