Brent Town Hall delisting application possible

The Council is considering a delisting application as part of its preparations for moving to a new Civic Centre in the Wembley City development.

Councillor Paul Lorber, leader of Brent Council, raised the idea of having the building taken off the register of Listed Buildings. He told the Harrow Times: “I am very supportive of the trust recognising important buildings. But what is so particularly peculiar or special about this place? There is some interest in getting the building delisted, and this is something we may look at.”

The new Civic Centre will be on Engineers Way. The Council has announced it will be designed by Hopkins Architects.

The present town hall was listed by English Heritage in 1990, and is noted for its “severe Scandinavian style three-storey front” but is now widley acknowledged as inefficient and unfit for the home of a modern local authority.

Delisting  would be a major help in selling the site to potential developers.
