Brent joins Harrow on fortnightly bin collection

Brent Council has said it wil move to fortnightly rubbish collections. The move should save £1.2m a year.

There will be a fortnightly waste collection, and a recycling collection on alternate weeks. Brent joins Harrow, Kingston and Bexley on the fortnightly frequency.

Local government minister Bob Neill told the Evening Standard that cutting collections could lead to fly-tipping, smells and problems with rats and other vermin.

He said: London councils should listen to the concerns of residents who want weekly rubbish collections. We are committed to working with local authorities to freeze council tax and help them improve the frequency of rubbish and recycling collections
