Brent’s Civic Centre has been named “Civic Building of the year 2014” at the SCALA awards ceremony which celebrates local authority construction and architectural excellence.
At the SCALA awards held in Leeds on Friday 14 November, the Civic Centre was praised for its exemplary sustainability credentials and for providing a welcoming and uplifting community space for the residents of Brent.
Around 100 projects entered the Competition and 12 were shortlisted. The winner’s award was presented to Brent Council and Hopkins Architects who designed the building.
The judging panel commented: “This exemplary building is not only highly sustainable but also elegantly provides a subtle civic presence with a welcoming and uplifting sequence of community spaces for the residents of Brent. The Panel was particularly impressed by the quality and attention to detail of all aspects of the building and its immediate environment”
Councillor Muhammed Butt, Leader of Brent Council said: “Since opening last year, the Civic Centre has seen thousands of people come and use the many public services that are available here. Not only is it a beautiful and eco-friendly building, it’s also a brilliant community hub for the residents of Brent. There is nothing better than seeing the space being used by Brent school children on a daily basis and I’m proud it’s a place where they can come together to learn and socialise.”
