Mayor of London Boris Johnson has said the mooted plan to use RAF Northolt as an extension of Heathrow is “ridiculous”.
Speaking to the Uxbridge Gazette before a campaign visit to Ruislip he said: “The idea that Northolt could be a viable alternative to a third runway is ridiculous.”
“The runway is too short, its capacity too small and the congestion it would cause on the surrounding roads would be unbearable.
“Any notion that Northolt be developed is a red herring. What we have to do is solve the problem of a new hub airport.”
The idea is likely to be considered in the government review of south east airport capacity recently postponed until after the Mayoral elections.
