A blueprint for the future use of the Hounslow Cavalry Barracks site has been approved by Hounslow Council’s Cabinet, setting out the potential for its redevelopment.
The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is looking to release the site next year, after the existing unit currently housed there is relocated elsewhere in the country.
Following public consultation on the draft planning brief for the barracks last year, the council’s formal adoption of the planning brief as a Supplementary Planning Document to Hounslow’s Local Plan means potential developers will know what the council hopes to see on the 14.85-hectare site. This includes the delivery of significant new homes, jobs, and green spaces on site and making provision for school places, health centres and transport infrastructure offsite in the wider locality.
Councillor Steve Curran, Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Planning and Regeneration, said: “The future re-development of the Cavalry Barracks provides a significant opportunity to deliver new private and affordable housing, community facilities and most importantly, the protection and enhancement of the Listed Buildings and historic environment.
“We want to preserve the long and proud military heritage of the site while retaining as much use of the 14 listed buildings, given that the entire site is in a conservation area. At the same time, and particularly with an area this large, there needs to be guidance for developers on what we would like to see and how it will integrate with the rest of Hounslow West, building and supporting a strong local community.”
The Planning Brief focuses on a high quality residential-led development, taking a holistic approach to allow potential developers to make the most of the entire site within its historic environment. Key elements in the Planning Brief for the site are to:
- deliver a new neighbourhood that meets the diverse aspirations of the community – a place where people can thrive, live healthy lives, feel safe, and belong;
- be consistent with the existing and emerging revised Hounslow Cavalry Barracks Conservation Area Appraisal;
achieve a high quality residential-led mixed use development comprising 1,000 residential units, with a wide mix of housing types, tenures and sizes, including family homes and 50% affordable homes;
- good quality local retail, food and drink facilities, employment uses, community facilities, and publicly accessible open spaces;
- achieve a comprehensive and well-planned high-quality sustainable development knitting the site into the local neighbourhood;
- ensure the provision of good pedestrian and cycle links within the site and to the Hounslow West Station via Beaversfield Park; and
- retain a strong identity reflecting the military heritage.
