The plans for a new store at the Westlands Industrial Estate site, in Millington Road, were refused earlier in the year, but have now been approved following the appeal by landowners British Steel Pension Fund.
The council’s refusal was based on the site’s designation as employment land, and a deisre to see manufacturing return to it. However, the promise of up to 500 jobs in an ASDA store and associated units
The planning inspector said the scheme would give rise to strong economic benefits for the whole area, and not have an adverse impact on Hayes town centre, while not, as the council maintained, result in an unacceptable loss of employment land.
