Apollo refurb under way

Refurbishment works have begun at the Hammersmith Apollo, which will now be closed until September.

Seats and internal structures have been removed as owners AEG Live look to re-energise the venue, and restore some of its former art-deco feel.

The plans by Foster Wilson architects aim to produce a lighter, more airy atmosphere closer to the original 1932 design, when the building was known as the Gaumont Palace Theatre.

In addition, exterior brickwork will be repaired, waterproofed and replaced with matching bricks. The building is expected to reopen in September.
