The idea of replacing the Hammersmith Flyover with a tunnel has resurfaced, with a leading LB Hammersmith & Fulham Councillor mentioning it in an interview.
Cllr Nick Botterill, lead member for transport, and a candidate in the leadership ballot triggered by Stephen Greenhalgh’s recent announcement that he will step down as leader in the summer, has said in an interview with the Hammersmith Chronicle that while he expects all four lanes of the Hammersmith Flyover to reopen by June, in the long term a tunnel “would make more sense”, and would allow land to be reclaimed for housing.
The idea was floated in 2008 at a gathering of architects, part of the London Festival of Architecture, but the economics of a tunnel are of course challenging.
